140528 - Autonomous Monitoring of Corrosion Damage in Pressure Vessels
Abstract:
This study conducts a thorough investigation into the complex behavior of ultrasonic guided waves (GW) and their interaction with corrosion within pressure vessels utilized across various sectors, including hydrogen energy, cryogenic applications, and the oil and gas industry. Specifically, the research meticulously examines the propagation and dispersion mechanisms of guided waves within pressure vessels constructed from high-grade stainless steel, encompassing conditions ranging from structural integrity to internal corrosion. Through rigorous experimentation and analysis, the study elucidates the profound impact of corrosion on guided wave propagation, resulting in significant alterations in wave mode amplitudes and velocities. Additionally, the investigation explores the influence of fluctuating internal pressure levels on guided wave behavior within pressure vessel structures, providing valuable insights into the dynamic response of pressure vessel systems under varying loading and operating conditions. The findings of this research hold significant implications for corrosion detection methodologies and structural health monitoring techniques across critical industries such as hydrogen energy, cryogenics, and oil and gas. By advancing our understanding of guided wave behavior and its interaction with corrosion, this study contributes to the development of more effective monitoring and maintenance strategies for pressure vessel systems, ultimately enhancing safety, efficiency, and operational reliability in diverse industrial settings.
