147631 - Tunable Control of Guided Waves for Structural Health Monitoring via Elastic Metamaterials
Abstract:
Ultrasonic guided waves have been widely investigated as a class of powerful tool for Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The important key towards a highly sensitive structural sensing system resides in whether it can take full advantage of the favorable features of the interrogative wave field. Elastic metamaterials have gained increasing attention due to their capability of controlling and manipulating structural waves and vibrations. This presentation addresses the recent research progress carried out at the Active Materials and Intelligent Structures (AMIS) Lab of Shanghai Jiao Tong University on controlling and manipulating guided waves for enhanced SHM/NDE performance via elastic metamaterials. In particular, the concept of engaging elastic metamaterials for inspection wave field control is put forward. Four different wave manipulation case studies will be demonstrated: frequency component filtering for nonlinear ultrasonic inspection, selective wave mode transmission for tunable single mode sensing, complete mode conversion for Lamb and shear horizontal interrogation mode switching, as well as tunable wave control forming a guided wave radar for directional wave interrogation. Numerical modeling and experimental results will be presented and discussed. The results showed that the control and manipulation of guided waves possess great potential for enhancing SHM and NDE performance. The presentation finishes with summary, concluding remarks, and outlook for future work.
