117762 - Round Robin Test for Development of Paut Performance Demonstration System Applied to Thermal Power Plant Boiler Tube in Korea
Volumetric non-destructive testing of boiler, crucial facilities of the thermal power plant, is performed during manufacturing, construction, and preventive maintenance for securing structural integrity. Radiographic testing (RT) was mainly applied for volumetric non-destructive testing. However, due to strengthening of nuclear safety regulations it is replaced by Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), demonstration has been performed. The demonstration results showed that the implementation of NDT Performance Demonstration system (NDT PD System) is necessary for securing and enhancing the reliability of PAUT. In this research, a Round Robin Test (RRT) was performed for the development ofthe PAUT NDT PD System for the boiler tube butt weld in thermal power plants. The specimens used in RRT had materials, specifications, and welding procedure identical to the properties of field. For reliability analysis of the probability of detection (POD) and sizing for each type of defect, the planar flaw (IP, LF, crack) and volumetric flaw (porosity, slag) were included in the specimens. In RRT, experienced and qualified inspectors participated and measured the size, location and type of the defect in the specimens without prior defect information. A reliability analysis was performed and presented based on the RRT results. All inspectors were able to detect most defects, but there was some variation in their sizing performance according to the method used for assessing the size of the defect. These results show that it is possible to PD for inspectors and system optimization is through RRT. It is anticipated that the reliability of PAUT results will be enhanced through the implementation of NDT PD System thermal power plants.
